A Clean Heart

“I feel like I can’t get it together. Then I remind myself that God doesn’t ask for perfection.”

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10

I have a pair of white tennis shoes that are my go-to shoes. I’m a mom of two little, active boys, so having white shoes in general isn’t the smartest decision, but I love a pair of neutral tennis shoes. After a day at the park, my shoes are covered in dust and dirt. After walking around the yard, my shoes are stained with grass and mulch. Even during a mundane task like loading the kids up in the car (which is exhausting, by the way), my shoes inevitably get dirty. I have to constantly clean my shoes.

In Psalm 51, King David is confessing his sins to God and asking for forgiveness. David is begging the Lord to purify his heart.

Just like my white tennis shoes, our heart gets dirty throughout our days. Gossip, loss of patience, lust, envy, foul language pollutes our heart. We will never be fully white (pure) on this side of eternity, because we live in a world broken by sin. Our natural bent is to sin.

God constantly cleans our heart, renews a right spirit, within us. We have a God who wants to do this for us because He loves us. God sent His only Son, Jesus, to take on our past, current, and future sins and to die a gruesome death on our behalf so that we can be in a relationship with God.

I don’t know about you, but some days I am exhausted from asking God for forgiveness. I feel like I can’t get it together. Then I remind myself that God doesn’t ask for perfection. He knows we are all broken. God asks us to seek forgiveness so He can renew us.

God welcomes us with open arms every time we go to Him!
