“I found myself wanting to see what the Bible said about a certain topic, or read one of the Gospels just to know Jesus better.”

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17
It amazes me that words written 2000 (or more) years ago still apply to us, average moms, in 2024. The people in the Bible did remarkable, notable, story-worthy works, and still today God uses those stories to speak directly to you and me. The Truth spoken in this book, the grace, the joy, the gospel, the perfect guidance, written so long ago, was created for us long before we were born. How good our God is to us!
If you’re like me, and you find it difficult to read the Bible, whether it's because of time, a lack of understanding or a lack of motivation, I have encouragement for you. You’re not alone, and it gets easier! Really diving into God’s Word used to be a big struggle for me, for all the reasons I listed above, but what I’ve found is that the more you do it, the easier it gets. I found myself wanting to see what the Bible said about a certain topic, or read one of the Gospels just to know Jesus better. I made time because I found my motivation to do so. And I started to understand more because I read more.
No matter where you’re at in your relationship with the Bible, there are so many reasons to read God’s written Word. The Message translation explains 2 Timothy 3:16-17 very well, “There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another—showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” (Bolded emphasis added by me)
The Bible is our guide to righteousness (right standing with God) and salvation. Rebellion and sin (mistakes) keep us away from God, but with guidance from His Word we have truth thrown at us and training to live the life God planned for us, a life with Him. The more we know God’s Word, the more godly we become, and we become better equipped to do the good works and tasks He has for us.
Action Steps:
Pick up your Bible and read it! Here are some suggestions of where to start:
Genesis (The very beginning)
Matthew (The first Gospel, and account of Jesus’s life)
Psalms
And, because I’ll never not suggest this one, Philippians (It’s my favorite)
Another way to read your Bible is to use a plan on the YouVersion Bible App. These plans are great ways to read the Bible in short, guided steps. You can even choose a topic that is on your heart.
For an extra challenge, share what you’ve been reading with a mom friend. Ask her what she’s been reading. It will spark an amazing conversation, and you might learn things about the Bible that you didn’t know.
Prayer: God, You are so amazing. You’ve given me everything, including a black and white guide for how to live my life. I know the value of these words, the importance of reading Your Word. Give me the understanding I need to read the true meaning of these words. I pray that I would always have the motivation and time, even if I have to say no to other things, to prioritize the Bible in my life. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
