God-fidence

“Therefore, in regard to confidence, our goal as moms should be to point our children to the very One who infuses them with purpose and identity.”

Confidence. What is it? How do we get it, and better yet, how do we keep it?
A few dictionaries define the word this way:
the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust
the state of feeling certain about the truth of something
a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities
We all long to be confident and exercise that confidence in the roles and responsibilities we have, especially when it comes to motherhood. We know our children are a reflection of us, and the things we try to do and teach in our home are more caught than taught. They will do what they see more than what we say.
Therefore, in regard to confidence, our goal as moms should be to point our children to the very One who infuses them with purpose and identity.
Confidence, apart from God, will always fall short and be more pride tied than graced based. Confidence that we learn by the ways of the world will be self-centered and put the burden of responsibility on our own efforts and abilities.
God-fidence, as I like to call it, is a confidence we find in Christ alone. It is based on His grace and not tied to our pride. It puts the focus on Christ in us and the burden of responsibility on Jesus and what He has already done on our behalf, possible only by His supernatural ability.
Psalm 139 sums this up quite beautifully.
“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.” (Psalm 139:1-6 ESV)
This passage reminds us that nothing happens apart from God’s knowledge of us. He knows it all, and He controls it all. His sovereignty infuses confidence into our identity. This is true for us as moms. It is true for our kids, too, and we must continue to live this out in front of them every day as we continue to pray…
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24, ESV)
Action Step:
As a family, make a list of Godly attributes you see in each other, and then spend time in prayer, acknowledging that these attributes are from Him. Spend time thanking Him for them and asking Him to help you use them for the good of others and for His glory.
Prayer: Father, thank You for infusing purpose into our lives by sending Your son, Jesus, to fulfill the purpose for His life by giving it up for us. That perfect sacrifice made a way for us to be confident in who You have created us to be. Thank You for loving us enough to save us, redeem us, and infuse us with purpose that is found in You alone. May our confidence always be steadfast in You so that we can live it out before others, especially our children. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
