Impossible Is Nothing

“As we can see, our God is in the business of doing the impossible.”

“For nothing will be impossible with God.” Luke 1:37 (ESV)
Today’s verse comes from the message the angel Gabriel gave to Mary when he announced to her that she would be the mother of the Messiah. Mary, who was a virgin at the time, naturally had some questions. The angel told her she would conceive by the power of the Holy Spirit, and would indeed be the mother of the Son of God. Before Mary could say anything else, the angel says, “For nothing will be impossible with God.” It’s as if the angel is assuring Mary that despite how crazy God’s plan seems, it’s possible because God is the one who is going to make it all happen.
Often in life we can find ourselves facing impossible circumstances, or praying for impossible outcomes to situations. This verse is an important reminder when we come to those times. Yet we must also remember that this verse does not mean things will turn out exactly how we want. While God can do anything because He is all powerful, He works all things out according to His will. And if we’re honest, our will and God’s will don’t always align. Along with our prayers for God to do the impossible, we must also be praying, “Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10).
The story of the gospel itself is one that seems impossible. That God would call broken sinners who are completely opposed to all the things of God to become His own children seems impossible. Yet God raised His own Son from the dead so that He could make us, dead in our sin, alive in Christ. As we can see, our God is in the business of doing the impossible. So take heart, friend, as you face the impossible. God can and will work things out for His glory and our good. He will make His name known, and we will look more like Christ in the end.
Action Step:
Write out things that have happened to you that seemed impossible at one time. Then write out what you may be facing now that seems impossible. Lay those things before God in thankfulness and hope.
