Life Lived Together

“God called us to be in relationships with each other. He uses those relationships to bless us and to spread the gospel.”

“And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.  And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” Acts 2:44-47

Acts chapter 2 tells us of the formation of the first churches of Jesus followers. It gives beautiful imagery of believers working together as one to meet the needs of all. There was not one person doing all the work. They weren’t refusing to accept people who couldn’t contribute the same way others did. They didn’t spend their lives separated from other believers, but instead they spent their lives together. They spent their days together, eating together, praising God together, doing life together and adding more believers…together.

What would change in your life if you had this same mindset? When you’re in need, do you accept help? Would you allow a mom friend to come into your home when you’re overwhelmed and actually be there for you? Are you willing to take time out of your busy schedule to be present for a friend? Do you eat meals, praise God, and physically spend time with those you love?

I hope that for most of us, the answer to these questions is yes. I do life with others. But when we really stop to think it through, I think that a lot of the time the busyness of life and our own worldly view gets in the way of doing some of these things. I know that we love our friends/family/church members, and we do as much as we can for them, but how often are we really doing life WITH them?

“And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Verse 47) Is this not our end goal? The people involved in the early days of the Christian church modeled a way of living that brought more and more believers to them. God blessed them and rewarded them by sending them more people to care for and to do life with. As an introvert myself, I completely understand that to some people, that sounds exhausting. But I want you to remember this: God called us to be in relationships with each other. He uses those relationships to bless us and to spread the gospel.

I want that for my life. I want blessed relationships that spread the gospel and I hope that you do too!

Action Steps:

  • Reflect on this: Do you allow others, outside of your family, to be part of your life? To be involved in your walk with God? This can be hard, but when we let those relationships in, we can be so blessed.

  • Are you willing to rearrange something in your schedule to be there for a friend? To spend time with a friend who needs community?
