Live Worthy

“Paul says our lives should be lived in a way that is worthy of this gospel. Jesus modeled sacrifice, love, devotion.”

“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,” Philippians 1:27

Whew, what a command! In this letter to the church of Philippi, Paul is urging the people to live their lives worthy of the gospel that he just taught to them, and to band together for the purpose of faith in the gospel.

But what is the gospel? I’m guessing you were absent for Paul’s teachings and the life of Jesus, but maybe, hopefully, you have heard or read the gospel in the books of Matthew, Mark, John, or Luke. Yesterday was Easter, maybe you celebrated the gospel with your family, or maybe you even spent the whole week celebrating Holy Week.

But, just in case, let me remind you of what we’re celebrating. The gospel is the good news that we have salvation through Jesus Christ. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, God provided a way for us, undeserving sinners, to have right standing with Him. God offers forgiveness of sins and eternal life to all who have faith in Jesus Christ.

Paul says our lives should be lived in a way that is worthy of this gospel. Jesus modeled sacrifice, love, devotion. He gave His life for those He loved (which is all of us, by the way). He modeled putting God first in everything, and praying to His father without ceasing. He modeled a faith so big it brought people back from the dead.

Moms, I’m only touching the surface of what a life worthy of the gospel should look like. To be honest, I don’t think I even have a good answer for what it looks like. Maybe it's something that is completely between you and God. My encouragement to you is this: follow Paul’s command to live a life worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Action Steps:

  • Live your life worthy of the gospel. Reflect on what this means to you. Are you letting your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ? If you’re not sure, go to God and ask what you need to do differently.

  • If you want a deeper understanding of the gospel, I encourage you to watch this video from The Bible Project and read through the books of Matthew, Mark, John, and Luke.
