Love Beyond Feeling

“Loving others well ultimately means pointing them to Jesus.”

“Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3 AMP
I think we can all agree that loving people well is hard. Culture tells us constantly that we should fight for our own happiness and never settle for less than we deserve. It says that if we love someone we will support them no matter what and that love is really a feeling of affection. The love we are called to, however, goes much deeper than feelings.
When it comes to prioritizing others, for me at least, it can be easy to think inside a box. Maybe it's saying no to a social event to have more time with your family, dialing down sarcasm around those who don't receive it well, or playing a game with your kid(s) when you really don't want to. And as moms, we already spend tons of time and energy taking care of others above ourselves. These are all good examples, but they are incomplete.
What about the times when we have to make unpopular decisions or statements to maintain spiritual integrity? What if we need to say no to good things in order to keep God and/or church attendance as a priority? If a fellow believer, spouse, or child is on a dangerous path, are we loving enough to graciously call them out? Are we willing to risk the disappointments, relational tensions, and potential arguments?
Loving others well ultimately means pointing them to Jesus. We can't do this without laying aside our own preferences, fears, and insecurities, even our very selves. We can't do this on our own, period. The great news is that we don't have to. Before ascending back to heaven, Jesus promised the very Spirit of God to empower us. With His help, we can fulfill the calling to love others in a way that makes them want to draw near to Jesus.
Action steps:
Listen to “Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury, and let the lyrics sink deep into your heart and mind.
Ask God to give you His heart for people and surrender anything that keeps you from loving well, knowing He wants to help you.
