“Time to clean the mirror so that our reflections aren’t accommodating our sin but reflecting Christ.”

“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” 1 John 1:7 ESV
I get up in the morning and start getting ready for work. There’s a water spot on my mirror above my sink, imagine it in your mind’s eye. It has appeared in the last week or so. I must have splashed water at some point. Instead of cleaning it off, I move ever so slightly to the right or left because I’m just the right height for it to be on my face when I look in the mirror. I accommodate it instead of just getting rid of it. Cleaning it off the mirror one morning wouldn’t take but a minute, and then I wouldn’t have to continue to accommodate it.
But I do accommodate it. Why?
I’m used to it being there. It’s become a part of my routine, a part of my habitual daily rhythm. I’ve accepted it. And this little water spot got me thinking…
What other things, sins, am I accommodating in my life instead of just taking care of them? What things am I moving ever so slightly to the left or right for because that’s what I’m used to? Or, oh man, what am I excusing away as “that’s just who I am”? Time to clean the mirror so that our reflections aren’t accommodating our sin but reflecting Christ.
Action Steps:
Girl, just go ahead and clean that bathroom mirror! Take care of that right now. Then write the 1 John 1:7 on a post-it note and stick it to the mirror so you see it each morning.
Carve out some quiet time with God. Ask Him to show you what areas are in need of “cleansing”. Pray Psalm 51:10 over yourself.
Prayer: Father, sometimes we get so caught up in the business of busyness that we look past the very things that You would like to work on in us. Forgive us for this. Help us to be diligent noticers of Your promptings. Help us to tune into You with the things that don’t serve us. Amen
