Not on Our Own Strength

“Our win comes from relying on Jesus's work at Calvary to make us right with God, from taking God at His word, from active trust that leads us to obey the Lord.”

“And who can win this battle against the world? Only those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God.” 1st John 5:5 NLT

Pride. Consumerism. Gossip. Discontentment and complaining. Selfishness. Defining our own truths and morality. These are just several items in a long list of things culture inundates us with and tries to make us believe are good and right.

And it's not just culture that shoves these things at us every day. Some of them, if not all, are inherent to our human nature. It has never been necessary to teach a child selfishness. Every person who ever lived has wanted to fulfill their desires. The urges to gossip, acquire more possessions, and independently make our own decisions rage within us every single day. We are at war with the world and with ourselves, and by ourselves we can not win the battle. Fortunately, scripture shows us how and where we can find victory.

1st John 5:1 tells us that we become children of God when we believe Jesus is the Christ. Verse 4 tells us “... every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith”. Our win comes from relying on Jesus's work at Calvary to make us right with God, from taking God at His word, from active trust that leads us to obey the Lord. In obedience, we have the assurance of heaven, and that is the ultimate victory over this broken world.

Action step:

  • Whatever battle you are facing, don't go into combat alone. Bring your struggles to God and allow others in your community to help and pray for you. If you need community, the Motherhood Meets Faith online community has moms of all ages and stages who would be honored to come alongside of you.

Prayer: God, You warned us the enemy would be on the prowl, and Your word clearly tells us spiritual warfare is a part of life. It also promises us victory in You. Will You remind us that we don't have to be strong enough to handle everything, and help us come to You in humble faith? Will You help us remember all the times You have come through and know You will do so again? You are so patient and gracious with us. Thank You for loving us and wanting to come to our defense and rescue.
