The Lord Your God, Your Mama Bear

“God Himself goes with us into whatever it is we’re facing in our days.”

“‘for the Lord your God is he who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.’” Deuteronomy 20:4 ESV

In this chapter of Deuteronomy, the Israelites were given commands to trust God and not be afraid when they went into battles against enemies, and were given a powerful promise that the Lord their God was right there with them in their fights. It’s so comforting to know that God gives us these commands to prepare us for what we face.

As moms, it can feel like we’re constantly in battles too, although our enemies look less like Biblical armies and more like schedules, tantrums, laundry piles and never-ending-to-do lists. Less life-threatening, but still overwhelming. It’s easy to feel like we’re all alone facing these giants.

But this promise from Deuteronomy applies to moms in 2025, too. God Himself goes with us into whatever it is we’re facing in our days. And He doesn’t just watch us struggling; He actively fights for us. He fights against the anxieties, the fears, the feelings of inadequacy, and the chaos that often surrounds motherhood.

When I think about God going with us to fight our enemies, it kind of reminds me of a mama bear going out and protecting her children. When it’s our children coming up against something, whether it’s making new friends, taking a test, trying out for a team, or something legitimately life-threatening, us mama bears will do all we can to go into the battle with our children to help them come out victorious. God does the same for us.

Moms, remember this promise that God will go before you into your battles. He is SO good, SO loving, and wants you to have the victory over every enemy.

Action Steps:

  • Go into your weekend with this promise, inviting God into every struggle you face.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise that You go with us and fight for us. Help us to remember that we are not alone in the challenges of motherhood. Give us strength, wisdom, and peace. Help us to trust in Your victory and to lean on You in every moment. In Jesus' name, Amen.
