Trusting God with His babies

“We must put our trust back into that open hand that God asks of us. I chose to take Him at His word; to trust that word. He has proven Himself victorious every single time before.”

“So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children.” NIV Genesis 50:21b
I'm going to assume you’ve heard of the story about Joseph and his coat. If you haven't, then spoiler alert: his brothers hated him and sold him to slavery. He went through MANY trying times and trials until God delivered him by putting him in a line of authority during a famine. His brothers, unknowingly, had to come to him in order to eat and stay alive. Finding out it was Joseph in charge, they didn’t know if he would retaliate or show compassion. But God's heart shined through Joseph and God spoke these words through him “so then, do not be afraid. I will provide for you and your children”
I don't remember exactly where I was when I first read those verses, but I knew I needed to engrave it into my heart. I knew my heart and soul would need it someday because parenting is wild, ya’ll. This would be God's word that I would recite back to Him in my deep prayers; reminding Him of the promises He made and reminding myself to trust Him with the promises He made.
So when we got the news that our oldest daughter's heart issues were back, I was shocked. I was dumbfounded. In fact, I literally laughed out loud as I read the results of some testing she had done. I thought, “No God. Not this again. This is a joke, right? You closed this chapter years ago with her previous heart surgery. You promised me this was over, God.”
Or did He? Did He promise me that the chapter was over, and we would never circle back to it? Or did He promise that I need not fear because He would take care of me and my babies?
It was through our oldest daughter that the Lord taught me the true meaning of an open hand. I remember sitting, waiting, for any and all updates during her heart procedure years ago, knowing that God gives and takes away. We must put our trust back into that open hand that God asks of us. I chose to take Him at His word; to trust that word. He has proven Himself victorious every single time.
So what do you need to open your hand to, mama?
Action Steps:
Repeat after me: I will trust that He knit my child together in my womb, to His desired perfection, like His word says. I trust that no matter what lies ahead, nothing is a surprise to Him, just like His word says. I believe that although He has trusted me to take care of His babies here on earth, that they are not mine to keep hold of with closed fists. I trust it all in His hands.
Prayer: God, we thank You for Your goodness over our lives. We thank You that You see the big picture. We thank You that Your goodness is so much better than what we find to be good. I ask that You would be with each mama reading this… that no matter what stage of mothering she is in, that she can trust You with her open hands and those babes placed right in the center of her palm. We thank You for always being victorious and always being good. Remind us of Who we put our trust into. Amen.
