What’s On Your Mind?

“What we fix our minds on will reflect the affections of our heart. We will spend our time thinking about the things that matter most to us.”

“So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:1-2 (CSB)

Where you set your eyes is where you give your attention, and where we fix our eyes will determine what we are headed towards. It would make sense, then, that what we fix our minds on will reflect the affections of our heart. We will spend our time thinking about the things that matter most to us. What do your thoughts drift toward when you notice your mind has been wandering? Are your thoughts about what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, morally excellent, or praiseworthy (Philippians 4:8)? If you find yourself not thinking about those things, what is your reaction? Do you ignore the potentially sinful things running through your mind and push them away, or do you repent and turn your mind towards the things of Christ?

Paul is addressing those who have been raised with Christ. That’s you, if you’re a believer. He is commanding believers to “seek the things above.” Why? Because that’s where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Paul tells us to “set your minds on things above, not earthly things.” Why? Because Paul knows that where our thoughts are, our affections and behaviors will follow. If we are spending our time thinking about earthly things, we will pursue those earthly things that do not hold any eternal significance. Not only that, but we will not be bringing God glory in the process.

Instead of being fixated on the things of this earth, we are to dwell on the things of God. We are to set our minds on Christ himself. Taking our thoughts captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) is difficult, takes time, and requires us to rely on the Holy Spirit. Our thoughts do not naturally drift towards holy things without effort and the help of Jesus. May we be moms who behold the glory of God, think about Him often, meditate on His attributes, letting those thoughts direct our actions. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, may we “seek first the kingdom of God” (Matthew 6:33).
