When Hurry Leads To Worry

“When hurry leads to worry, it may be time to pull away to pray. And there’s no better example to follow than Jesus himself.”

In the first chapter of Mark, Jesus lives up to His claim of being “the Way, the Truth, and the Life” (John 14:6) by simply modeling His method, so we can follow His Way, walk in the Truth, and live in the Light of His love. It is truly a transformational way to live. It will not only change you, it’ll impact your home, your husband, and your children, too.
“Before daybreak the next morning,
Jesus got up and went out
to an isolated place to pray.”
(Mark 1:35, NLT)
“And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
he departed and went out
to a desolate place, and there he prayed.”
(Mark 1:35, ESV)
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,
Jesus got up, left the house and went off
to a solitary place, where he prayed.”
(Mark 1:35, NIV)
The key to eliminating hurry and worry, is intentionality to habitually spend time with the Prince of Peace. Jesus is Peace personified, and in order to find true peace, we must first be found in Him.
I share Mark 1:35 in three different translations in order to focus on the depth of its meaning, which can have a profound impact in our lives if properly applied. Let's take a look at some of the specific words used in these three versions.
Early.
Or another way of saying it: simply prioritize prayer. First things first. Before you start your day, get up, get out, and pray! Set a routine, and watch that routine inform the other things. My schedule allows for me to go on a prayer walk. During the winter months, some mornings were COLD, but it was a non-negotiable, and it truly set the tone for my day, and I can definitely tell a difference on the days I skip.
Isolated, desolate, and solitary.
Why are these descriptions of the place we posture ourselves to meet with Jesus so important? Ponder that as you read the definition of each.
Isolated — far away from other places, buildings, or people; remote.
Desolate — (of a place) deserted of people and in a state of bleak and dismal emptiness.
Solitary — done or existing alone.
Remove distraction by getting away from other people, places, or things.
Eliminating of hurry and worry allows us to cultivate stillness and silence, which are exactly what we need to hear God’s voice over the world’s noise.
Pray.
Talk to God before you talk to others. Prioritize prayer by making a plan today and implement it everyday. You’ll be grateful you did!
Prayer: Father, thank You for not only loving me, but for loving me enough to send Your son, Jesus, to save me, redeem me, and set me free from the bondage of sin. In the safety of that freedom, I am grateful for the relationship I have with You, my Heavenly Father. Thank You for showing me every day the way You want me to go, the things You want me to do, the things You want me to say, and the choices You want me to make. I am grateful for the example Jesus set and the lifestyle He modeled. It has truly helped me eliminate hurry and worry in my life, and I pray You will forever hold me fast and keep me close to Your heart so I can continually dwell in that place of peace. Help me live this out in front of my family and friends. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
