Wisdom in the Chaos (and Maybe a Cup of Coffee)

“Wisdom is offered by a God who knows exactly what it’s like to deal with children who don’t listen and still loves them deeply.”

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5 (NIV)

Let’s be honest—motherhood is a constant game of “Whack-a-Mole,” except the moles are questions like:

• “Can I wear my Halloween costume to church?”

• “Do fish have birthdays?”

• “Why can’t we eat spaghetti for breakfast?”

And that’s just before 8 a.m.

In the thick of mom life, wisdom isn’t just helpful—it’s essential. Unfortunately, it doesn’t arrive in the mail with your baby’s birth certificate. Instead, wisdom is offered by a God who knows exactly what it’s like to deal with children who don’t listen and still loves them deeply. (Sound familiar?)

James 1:5 gives us the open invitation we all need: if you don’t have the answers—and let’s face it, you don’t always—just ask. God doesn’t roll His eyes or hand you a parenting book with a passive-aggressive sticky note. He gives generously and without judgment. He knows some days you’re crushing it, and other days you’re hiding in the pantry with a granola bar and your last shred of sanity.

So, when you feel like you’re winging it (again), pause. Breathe. Ask Him. Whether it’s wisdom for discipline, patience with a toddler meltdown, or strength to answer “why” for the 147th time today—He’s got you.

Action Steps:

  • What area of motherhood do you feel like you’re running on empty when it comes to wisdom? Take a moment to identify it. Then, instead of Googling your way through it, bring it to God first.

  • Before the house wakes up (or while brushing your teeth if that’s your only quiet moment), take 60 seconds to ask God for wisdom for the day ahead. Be specific—He can handle it.

  • Jot down the moments that consistently challenge you—whether it’s bedtime chaos, sibling arguments, or picky eating—and turn each one into a simple prayer this week. Watch how He shows up in the details.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for not requiring me to have it all figured out. Thank You for offering wisdom freely, even when I’m knee-deep in laundry and questions I don’t have answers for. Help me pause, breathe, and turn to You before I spiral or snap. Fill me with Your wisdom today—whether I’m refereeing sibling squabbles, making dinner out of random pantry finds, or just trying to make it to bedtime. Amen.
