“The same Holy Spirit who came to Mary and revealed she would carry the Son of God is the same Holy Spirit living inside you.”

“The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.” Luke 1:35 (NIV)
The story of how Jesus was born could cause some to question if it’s real or made up. There has never been a birth like His and there never will be again. It’s not possible for a virgin to give birth but through God, it was. I think we underestimate the power of God and the Holy Spirit in our lives. I know I do. These last few Christmases I’ve read the birth story of Jesus, and it reminds me of the supernatural ways God works in those who follow him.
As a mom do you ever feel insignificant? There are days I buy into the lie that what I do for my kids isn’t appreciated, and this makes me feel very ordinary. Other women on Instagram and Facebook don’t seem ordinary, but seem very important. They travel, have important corporate jobs, have thousands of followers on Instagram and have major influence. Me, on the other hand, I have very few followers, and am often wearing a ball cap and stained clothes while cleaning toys and food up off the floor the majority of the day.
Sometimes I wonder how Mary felt. She isn’t talked about in the Bible very much and she doesn’t come across as a woman who had a ton of influence, money, or great importance. But God chose her anyway! She was chosen to receive such an honor – carrying Jesus! When the angel told Mary she would carry the Son of God, her response wasn’t one of fear, doubt or that she felt too insignificant to do so. Her response was, “I am the Lord’s servant” and “May your word to me be fulfilled”. She wasn’t important in her community, but she was willing to do what she was called to.
Moms, you are not ordinary, you’re chosen. The same Holy Spirit who came to Mary and revealed she would carry the Son of God is the same Holy Spirit living inside you. He is powerful enough to do any miracle and our response should be like Mary’s was – willing, sacrificial, and eager to carry out God’s plan in our lives.
Action Steps:
Read Luke Chapter 1 this holiday season and pray for God’s will over your life.
Pray: God I thank You so much for who You are. I stand in awe of what You do for Your people. Thank You for choosing me and giving my life a purpose and a calling. I willingly, sacrificially and eagerly agree to carry out the plan You have for me. I love You and give all the glory to You. Amen.
